Retrofill

Transformer Retrofilling

Retrofilling replaces aging or unsuitable transformer fluid with new insulating fluid to help improve performance and extend the service life of the equipment. It can be a practical alternative for smaller transformers where hot oil reclamation may not be cost-effective or when existing fluid has concerns such as a low flash point, contamination, or poor electrical, chemical, or physical properties.

MVA develops a retrofilling plan based on the transformer’s condition, location, fluid type, and operating requirements. Our team can support transformers installed in underground vaults, high-rise buildings, industrial facilities, and other difficult-to-access environments.

A Carefully Planned Retrofilling Process

A successful retrofill requires more than draining the existing fluid and adding new oil. The transformer and replacement fluid must be evaluated for compatibility, and the work must be carefully controlled to reduce residual fluid, moisture, gases, and contaminants.

Depending on the application, MVA’s retrofilling services may include:

  • Evaluating the transformer and existing insulating fluid
  • Developing a site-specific work plan
  • Draining and properly managing the existing fluid
  • Flushing the transformer when required
  • Vacuum filling with the selected replacement fluid
  • Oil processing and degasification
  • Leak inspections and operational checks
  • Collecting post-retrofill samples for laboratory testing
  • Establishing follow-up testing to monitor fluid condition

Why Retrofill a Transformer?

Retrofilling may be recommended when testing identifies fluid conditions that cannot be adequately corrected through routine processing or when changing the insulating fluid offers operational or environmental advantages. Potential benefits may include:

  • Improved insulating-fluid quality
  • Increased fire point when converting to an approved less-flammable fluid
  • Removal of oil with degraded properties
  • Support for PCB remediation plans
  • Improved moisture and dissolved-gas levels
  • Extended transformer service life
  • A cost-effective alternative to premature transformer replacement

Diagnostics and Field Service Working Together

MVA combines transformer field service experience with in-house oil diagnostics. Before the project, testing can help determine the condition of the existing fluid and identify concerns that should be addressed during the retrofill. After completion, laboratory testing provides a new baseline and helps confirm the condition of the replacement fluid.

For transformers with PCB concerns, the retrofilling plan should account for residual contamination within the transformer. Follow-up sampling may be required to verify PCB concentrations and support applicable regulatory requirements.
