High-Voltage Resonant Testing Services

High-voltage equipment needs insulation capable of withstanding the electrical stresses it will encounter in service. During installation, commissioning, or certain repair projects, AC withstand testing can help verify insulation integrity before equipment is energized.

MVA provides high-voltage resonant testing services supported by experienced field technicians and a comprehensive understanding of transformer installation, electrical diagnostics, and repair. Our team evaluates the equipment and project requirements to determine an appropriate test configuration and coordinate the work with your overall service schedule.

What Does a Resonant Test Set Do?

A resonant test set generates high AC voltage for insulation withstand testing. It uses a reactor and the capacitance of the equipment being tested to establish resonance, allowing the system to produce the required test voltage while reducing the input power needed compared with a conventional AC test arrangement.

During testing, a specified voltage is applied for a defined period under an established procedure. The test evaluates whether the insulation withstands that electrical stress without breakdown. When required and supported by the test arrangement, partial discharge measurements can provide additional information about insulation behavior.

Resonant testing serves a different purpose from tests such as transformer turns ratio, winding resistance, or power factor testing. Together, appropriate electrical tests provide a more complete assessment of equipment condition.

Equipment and Testing Applications

Resonant systems can be configured for several types of high-voltage equipment. Depending on the available test system, equipment characteristics, and required procedure, applications may include:

  • Power transformers: Applicable AC withstand testing of transformer insulation.

  • High-voltage cables: Insulation testing following installation or other qualifying work.

  • Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS): Applicable on-site withstand testing after assembly or installation.

  • High-voltage bushings: Insulation testing using an appropriate setup for the bushing and project requirements.

MVA reviews each request to confirm whether the equipment and required test fall within our available capabilities. Equipment voltage class alone does not determine the test setup; capacitance, required test voltage, frequency, and test duration also affect system selection.

Testing at Your Project Site

Bringing high-voltage testing to the jobsite allows the work to be coordinated with installation, assembly, and commissioning activities. Successful field testing begins with careful planning, including access to the equipment, available power, isolation requirements, grounding, and sufficient space for the test system and controlled work area.

MVA works with your project team to establish the testing scope and prepare for site conditions. Our transformer field experience helps us coordinate testing with related work, including assembly, vacuum filling, electrical diagnostics, and transformer repairs.

Before testing begins, the equipment must be properly prepared and isolated according to the approved procedure. Our team establishes the required test boundaries and coordinates activities with site personnel.

When Is Resonant Testing Used?

High-voltage resonant testing may be specified as part of a new equipment installation, substation commissioning, or acceptance testing program. It may also be appropriate after certain repairs or component replacements when required by the manufacturer, equipment owner, or governing test specification.

The need for testing should be evaluated for the individual asset. Equipment design, service history, insulation condition, and the work performed all influence whether a withstand test is appropriate and how it should be conducted.

MVA helps customers connect the testing scope to the project’s requirements so that the work supports informed decisions about energization and return to service.

Transformer Expertise Behind the Test

A successful test requires more than high-voltage equipment. It requires an understanding of the asset, a suitable procedure, careful execution, and clear documentation.

MVA combines transformer field services with electrical diagnostics and in-house oil analysis, giving customers access to expertise across multiple aspects of transformer condition. When additional evaluation is needed, our team can help coordinate complementary testing and identify practical next steps.
